Chris Sutton has admitted that he has to say something about Mohamed Salah which almost seems ridiculous after Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
It was Mohamed Salah who rescued a point for the Reds at the weekend. The Egyptian scored from the penalty spot after Harvey Elliott was brought down inside the area by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
As shown by Whoscored, no-one had more attempts on goal in the draw than Salah. The 31-year-old had six shots, with two going off target. He missed a golden chance during the second-half.
Of course, Salah has not made too many appearances in the Premier League since the turn of the year. He was initially away on international duty with Egypt. But he has also been sidelined with injury.
He has featured in the last four league games, scoring twice. But he came off on the hour-mark against Sheffield United last week.
Chris Sutton questions Mohamed Salah after Liverpool draw
And speaking on The Monday Night Club after the draw with Manchester United, Chris Sutton hinted that he has not been overly impressed by Liverpool’s talisman since his return.
Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images“Mo Salah’s the one, since his injury, how can you criticise Mo Salah? It’s ridiculous, but he’s come back and just, is it fair to say, not quite looked like Mo Salah before the injury. Is that fair? I don’t know. You’re all glaring at me like I’ve said something really bad,” he said.
This could yet be one of the forward’s best seasons
It is ridiculous to criticise Salah. He is someone who has scored 17 times in just 25 league appearances this season.
This could yet be the most prolific league season Salah has had since his unbelievable first year on Merseyside.
Season | League goals |
2017/18 | 32 |
2018/19 | 22 |
2019/20 | 19 |
2020/21 | 22 |
2021/22 | 23 |
2022/23 | 19 |
2023/24 | 17 |
But it still feels as though Liverpool are yet to hit top gear.
That is ominous for their title rivals, particularly when they have players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota to come back.
Certainly, if Salah finds anything like his best form in the final seven league games of the season, Liverpool have an unbelievable chance of getting across the line.
