Darwin Nunez is an enigma of a footballer.
The Uruguayan has all of the physical attributes to be a full-blown superstar in this game, but, at the same time, he just doesn’t seem to be able to put it all together.
He’s so fast, so strong and so hard-working, but that end product has always been ever so slightly lacking.
Speaking to The Anfield Wrap, John Barnes has been discussing Nunez’s abilities, and while he noted that the Uruguayan does have some shortcomings when it comes to his finishing ability, he says that he doesn’t have an issue with the £70m player.

Barnes shared his verdict on the striker.
“I haven’t got an issue with Nunez. Nunez will never be an Ian Rush, a John Aldridge or a Robbie Fowler. But he can do things they can’t. We want perfection, we want Nunez to have that hold up play, work hard, chase back and tackle as well as scoring 30 goals a season, he would be the best player in the world, but that’s not who he’s going to be,” Barnes said.
“If you’re expecting him to be as clinical as Robbie Fowler, he will never be that. You talk about players, if Matt Le Tissier worked hard he’d be the best player in the world, if Teddy Sheringham had pace he’d be the best player in the world, if Nunez could finish like Robbie Fowler, but you have to take them for the player they are.”
Tough to dislike
Nunez can be an incredibly frustrating player – he’s not scored a single goal in any of his last 10 games, but it’s very difficult to dislike him as a footballer.
All you can ever ask of a player is to give 100% every single time they step onto the pitch, and that’s exactly what Nunez does.
Yes, he’s got plenty of room to improve, but you can’t knock his worth ethic or effort levels.
As Barnes says, he has no issue with Nunez, and it’s hard to imagine any Liverpool fans do.
