'Yes mate, go on': Ben Foster says £35m Liverpool player did something outstanding v Manchester City

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been praised by Ben Foster for what he did late on in the Premier League draw with Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds and Pep Guardiola’s Citizens shared the spoils in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield.

However, Liverpool felt they were denied a late penalty when Mac Allister was caught by a high Jeremy Doku challenge in the box.

The Man City winger caught the £35million Liverpool man on the side of his chest with a high boot deep into injury time, leaving him in a heap on the ground.

However, referee Michael Oliver waved away Reds appeals for a penalty, a decision that led to much dispute after the game.

“It’s a penalty for all football people,” Klopp told Sky Sports post-match. “It’s a penalty for football people, if you think it’s not one then maybe you’re not a football fan.”

Liverpool ace Alexis Mac Allister ‘can see’ that he needed to ‘take one of the team’

Foster, speaking on The Cycling GK, seemingly agreed that it should’ve been a penalty, but he also sought to break down why the referee may have not deemed it as such.

He began by talking about how Doku let the ball bounce, adding: “At that point, I’m looking at Mac Allister and I’m thinking ‘right mate you are gonna have to take one for the team here’.

If you just run full speed into that ball, get the first contact, Jeremy Doku is going to kick you, and it’s going to be a penalty it’s as simple as that.

“Mac Allister can see it as well, so what Mac Allister does, he runs and I’m thinking ‘yes mate, go on, take one, even if you get one in the face, just take it in the face!’.

‘And he goes and he sort of takes one, but not really, he sort of goes and turns a little bit right. Doku, as expected, follows through with a high sort of clearance, sort of half gets the ball but follows through with the studs into his chest.

‘I just feel that if McAllister would have ran almost face first into it and took one in the face or chest like he would have done, it would have been a guaranteed penalty. The fact that he kind of turned a bit gave the referee a little bit out.’

Liverpool should’ve had a late penalty against Manchester City – opinion

Mark Goldbridge went on to say that it shouldn’t have been a case of Mac Allister putting himself at risk of more harm and pain just for the sake increasing his chances of winning a penalty.

And he’s correct there. Doku caught Mac Allister high and with studs showing, so that should’ve been a penalty.

With margins so fine at the top of the game, let’s hope that Oliver’s controversial decision doesn’t go on to make a huge impact in the title race.
