Danny Murphy has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised to see Xabi Alonso named as Liverpool’s new manager before the summer transfer window.

Xabi Alonso has emerged as the early favourite to land the Liverpool job this summer after Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Klopp will be bidding to draw the curtains on his time in Merseyside with a Premier League title as the Reds currently lead the way in the league.

But speculation regarding his potential successor has already ramped up, with Alonso heavily linked.

The Spaniard is doing an exceptional job with Bayer Leverkusen and currently sits two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

And Danny Murphy believes the Liverpool legend could be named as Klopp’s successor before the summer transfer window.

Murphy on Alonso replacing Klopp before the summer

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Murphy explained why he believes Alonso would be a good fit for Liverpool at the moment.

“I think the news will galvanise the players for the rest of this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if Xabi Alonso is confirmed before the summer transfer window for an orderly transition,” he said.

He added: “In fact, the timing might work out perfectly, with Alonso’s emergence as a phenomenal leader at Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. It seems a perfect fit.

“It’s not a necessity to have a Liverpool connection to take the job — Klopp has proved that — but there isn’t another stand-out candidate who is less of a risk than Alonso anyway.

“The fact he also knows the club and will be warmly accepted by fans gives him a brilliant foundation.

“It has been a golden period for Liverpool and does not have to end just because Klopp is leaving.”

The news regarding Klopp’s future shocked the footballing world on Friday, with the German boss admitting he is ‘running out of energy’.

As a manager who has delivered every trophy available during his spell at Anfield, his successor will have big shoes to fill.

Not only that, Klopp is adored by the Liverpool faithful and the next man in the dugout will need the full backing of supporters.

Alonso ticks plenty of boxes in that regard as a player who won the Champions League with Liverpool.

The 42-year-old is also one of the most exciting managers in Europe at the moment, with his Leverkusen side currently playing an exceptional brand of football in Germany.
