Liverpool are in a tricky position at the moment as they plan for life without Jurgen Klopp from the summer onwards.
Despite flying on the field, there is so much to sort off the pitch. With Klopp and his coaching staff leaving, a new manager is needed. Further, a new sporting director needs to come in, with Jorg Schmadtke set to go as well.
Of course, there’s been fresh talk of Michael Edwards returning to the club. FSG apparently feel Edwards would come back in a certain capacity, although it’s believed he’d want full control of all footballing matters. And that includes having a sporting director working below him.
And speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Ben Jacobs has said that should Edwards arrive, he already has his first move planned.
Michael Edwards to appoint Liverpool sporting director
Writing about the situation at Liverpool with Edwards, Jacobs has said that Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes is likely to be appointed if he returns.
“Edwards would look to bring in a sporting director below him, who would likely be Richard Hughes from Bournemouth. So, if Liverpool plan to try and get Edwards and give him control, they can’t move for anybody else yet because they need an answer first from Edwards. If he says yes, he’ll recruit for everything, including the new manager. They’ll move on to other sporting directors and continue their managerial search if he says no,” Jacobs said.
“So, we’ve almost got a dual process where Liverpool is looking at non-Edwards candidates for sporting director. First, Liverpool are waiting to see whether Edwards wants this overarching role. If he says yes, then everything is almost on pause to allow Edwards to input to a sporting director, any other recruitment roles, and, of course, a new manager.”

It’s going to be all change for the Reds come the summer and there’s some huge calls to be made by FSG.
Of course, the new manager is the big one. But it’s obvious they also want to get things right in and around the new manager and making sure the set up above him is correct seems just as vital.
Clearly, there is a lot of love towards Edwards from the job he did before. If he comes back, it would be a big boost for the whole club having a trusted pair of hands in charge at a time of big change.
It’s a new era coming for Liverpool and with Edwards back, that transition to that new era would probably feel a lot easier.
