In the end, Liverpool settled for a point as they drew 2-2 with Manchester United in another pulsating game at Old Trafford.

Despite Liverpool hammering United in the opening 45 minutes, it was Erik ten Hag’s side who somehow found themselves in front.

Bruno Fernandes capitalised on a mistake by Jarrell Quansah, before Kobbie Mainoo scored a stunning curling effort to put United in front.

However, Liverpool kept the pressure up and that pressure told in the end as Harvey Elliott went down from a challenge by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Mo Salah duly converted from the penalty spot.

For Salah, it was his chance to have an impact on a game where he’d otherwise been nullified in the main.

Of course, Salah stepped up and sent Andre Onana the wrong way to earn Liverpool a point.

And in doing so, Salah showed the Wayne Rooney’s comments on him prior to the game were right.

Mo Salah proves Wayne Rooney right with Liverpool penalty

Commenting on Salah for Premier League Productions before the game, former United striker Rooney admitted he loved watching Salah and that at times, he does little before cropping up with a big moment.

“Salah is a world-class player and he’s someone I really enjoy watching. At times he looks like he’s not interested in the game and they’re always the most dangerous players – you almost forget about him, and then he does something to change the game,” Rooney said.

Of course, it was ‘just’ a penalty for Salah to tuck away.

But he did so with aplomb and kept his cool in the cauldron of Old Trafford.

So many might well have missed but Salah, who is used to handling the big moments in big games, simply stepped up and slotted in when it mattered.

As Rooney says, Salah can indeed go through games without doing a lot. But in the end, he nearly always manages to make an impact and he did that today.
