'World-class' player has just signed a new contract, after reports Liverpool tried to sign him last month

Liverpool didn’t do any incoming business in January and any hopes they had of eventually signing Takefusa Kubo appear to now be over.

The Japanese star, currently playing for Real Sociedad, was apparently on Liverpool’s radar in January before he went off to play in the Asia Cup.

In the end, Liverpool never pushed on with a move but Kubo has remained a player who has been getting a mention ahead of a potential summer move.

However, it looks like Liverpool’s hopes of landing Kubo anytime soon have been completely dashed thanks to Real Sociedad.

Liverpool won’t be signing Takefusa Kubo

Confirming it on X today, Fabrizio Romano has shared the news that Kubo has indeed now signed a new contract with Sociedad until 2029.

22-year-old Kubo is one of the current stars of La Liga and has had high praise from the likes of Xavi.

Indeed, the current Barcelona manager has even said the Japanese star is already a world-class talent.

“Trust me, Kubo is world class player. With and without the ball, he’s top top level. He scores goals and provides assists. Kubo’s time at La Masia for Barca? I wasn’t at the club at the time but we will come across these situations, for sure,” Xavi said.

Kubo has been mentioned as a potential long-term replacement for Mo Salah, who continues to attract interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia ahead of the summer window.

However, any sort of deal is now going to take huge money. It remains to be seen if there is a release-clause in Kubo’s deal. But even if there is, it’s likely to be a big one.

Of course, that doesn’t mean clubs won’t keep prodding away at trying to sign him. But for now, it does look like Sociedad have got their man tied down for the immediate future at least.
