'Working on it': Club chief says Liverpool now actively trying to land 'big-time' manager

Liverpool are currently in pursuit of a new manager to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

The Reds boss announced earlier this year that he would be stepping down from the Anfield hotseat.

“I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp said in a video shared by the Liverpool media team. “I understand that it’s a shock.”

The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was due to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.

Liverpool have since been linked with a host of coaches to take the reins from Klopp, with Xabi Alonso said to be the top target for the Reds.

Liverpool ‘working on’ Xabi Alonso deal

Now, Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has revealed that his club is up against the likes of Liverpool in pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen boss.

“Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it,” Hoeness told Ran Sport, as translated by BBC Sport.

“He’s proven that he can be a coach for the big time.

“There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don’t have a job or who are on sabbatical.

“It’s not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things.”

There’s no doubt that Alonso would be probably the best candidate to take the Liverpool reins after Klopp steps down.

The Spaniard gets the club, having starred for the Reds during his playing career, making 210 appearances and registering 18 goals and 20 assists.

Alonso has also made a name for himself as a world-class young manager, turning Leverkusen into one of Europe’s strongest teams this season.

They are unbeaten in 38 games in all competitions this season and have left Bayern seriously trailing in the Bundesliga title race.

Liverpool will certainly hope they can persuade Alonso to take the Anfield reins.

However, with strong competition from the likes of Bayern and Real Madrid, it won’t be easy for the Reds.
