World Cup winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister returned to action in England with a fine performance to help Brighton see off Middlesbrough.

Mac Allister has seen his stock rise rapidly after a stunning World Cup with Argentina. His performances in the middle of the park have left Brighton facing a fight to keep hold of him.

A number of English teams are thought to be keen. Liverpool are said to be eyeing Mac Allister as a potential Jude Bellingham alternative. Meanwhile, Arsenal have shown their own interest, while Tottenham aren’t being discounted either.

Based on his showing at Middlesbrough today, it’s easy to see why Mac Allister is so in demand. He scored twice, and the BBC’s Stephen Warnock was full of praise for the Brighton ace, lauding him as a ‘wonderful player’.

“The piece of skill from Mac Allister is confidence. It reminded me of John Barnes scoring a similar goal against Crewe. It’s instinctive with the little Cruyff touch, he is a wonderful player,” Warnock said of Mac Allister.

Brighton are thought to be looking for around £50m for Mac Allister. However, they are under no pressure to sell, and as yet, haven’t received a concrete bid.

TBR’s View: Mac Allister shows his class

It’s hard not to come back from a World Cup win and not be high on confidence but Mac Allister simply oozed it today, as well as showing his quality.

Brighton really do face a big fight to keep him. On this evidence, clubs will be scrambling to sign him in January and won’t be put off by the price tag either.

Mac Allister will get a move to one of the ‘big clubs’ at some point. For Brighton, it’s a case of trying to keep him as long as possible, before then maximising his sell-on value.
