Liverpool fans have has the pleasure to watch some truly world-class players in recent years.
The likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all undoubtedly world-class players, but perhaps the most exciting player to have come through Anfield in this modern era is Roberto Firmino.
The Brazilian was an utter joy to watch at his best, he could do almost anything on the ball and he had tons of talent.
Speaking on the Football’s Greatest Podcast, Phil Thompson has been full of praise for Firmino when ranking his five greatest Liverpool players of all-time.
Thompson says that Firmino doesn’t quite make his list, but he says that he is his best player of the modern era, stating that he had him down as being better than Van Dijk.

The pundit spoke about the attacker.
“I know what you mean Jeff. Get this, with Virgil van Dijk and the great centre-backs, Bobby Firmino was my best player throughout this time. He was so exciting, twinkle-toes, he was the Ian Rush of that trio of Bobby, Mo and Sadio. Bobby was wonderful, but would he be in this list, probably no and that sounds awful from a player who was my favourite being a fan. I didn’t want him to leave because he brought some great memories,” Thompson said.
What a player
Firmino may have been released by Liverpool at the end of last season, but we mustn’t forget just how marvellous a player the Brazilian was during his time in a red shirt.
The attacker was a truly beautiful footballer, and while he didn’t score the same number of goals as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, he was just as important.
The one-time £28m signing will undoubtedly go down as a Liverpool legend, and, in the eyes of some, he is indeed Liverpool’s best player of this incredible modern era.
