‘Will be a shock’: Tim Sherwood now makes surprise claim about Liverpool legend Jordan Henderson

Tim Sherwood has made a ‘shock’ claim about former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Jurgen Klopp ultimately decided to move Jordan Henderson on over the summer as he revamped his midfield.

The 33-year-old will undoubtedly go down as a club legend after he captained Liverpool to eight major honours during his time in Merseyside.

This included the Champions League and a Premier League title, which ended the Reds’ long wait for domestic league success.

Despite not being the star of that Liverpool side, his achievements at the club certainly can’t be understated and Tim Sherwood believes he’s the club’s greatest captain of the Premier League era, over Steven Gerrard.

Sherwood makes ‘shock’ Henderson claim

Speaking on talkSPORT, Sherwood discussed the greatest captains of the Premier League era and named the likes of Roy Keane, Vincent Kompany, Patrick Vieira and John Terry.

The former Blackburn Rovers man, who captained his old side to a title himself, believes Henderson should be considered as one of the great skippers.

“My last one will be a shock, a Liverpool player and everyone thinks I’m just going to say Steven Gerrard straight away, but I think the greatest captain they’ve had in Premier League history is Jordan Henderson,” Sherwood said.

“I think Stevie was an incredible player and I don’t know what he did behind the scenes but what he did was obviously very good. But Jordan, for me, having won the Champions League and Premier League, I think he just edges it.

“He was obviously a leader. He was someone who didn’t care about what people thought opf him when he was telling them bad news on the pitch. He was good foil between the management and the players, with Jurgen.

“He was a good servant to the club and I think he has to go up there as one of the greatest Premier League captains.”

This will certainly divide opinion amongst Liverpool supporters.

There is no competition between Gerrard and Henderson when it comes to their ability.

Gerrard dragged Liverpool over the line in some huge games almost single-handedly and even led them to a stunning Champions League victory.

But Henderson was a key part of the most successful Liverpool side of the Premier League era.

The odds were arguably more in Henderson’s favour considering the team he had around him, whereas Gerrard was very much the main man throughout his time in Anfield.

One thing that may count against Gerrard is the fact he didn’t quite manage to get over the line when it came to winning a league title with his boyhood club.

But leadership isn’t just about the honours you pick up and as a player who also came through the ranks at Liverpool, we’d imagine the majority of Liverpool fans would opt for Gerrard in this debate.
