Liverpool seem to be making moves in their bid to hire a replacement for Jurgen Klopp after suffering a blow in a possible bid for Bayer Leverkusne’s Xabi Alonso – with a verbal agreement now in place.
The Reds have been linked with a whole host of managers since Klopp announced he would be leaving. Almost impossible to replace, but a job that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are tasked with doing.
The likes of Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, German gaffer Julian Nagelsmann and even Tottenham man Ange Postecoglou have been linked. Danny Murphy claimed the latter is a supposed Liverpool fan.
But, it seems Ruben Amorim is the man that is closing in on a move to replace Klopp. The Portuguese gaffer is staring in his role as manager of the Portuguese giants, lasting more than four years in the job.
Ruben Amorim’s agent holds meeting with Liverpool on Tuesday
Winning 152 of 215 games, Amorim guided Sporting to the Liga NOS title for the first time in 20-21 – 19 years after Sporting’s last title. This season, his side sit four clear with a game in hand. Liverpool are keen.
Reports on Monday evening from Amorim’s Portugal claimed that actually, Liverpool were meeting with his agent Raul Costa. Costa would then go to Sporting in a bid to convince them to let Amorim leave.

The report also delivered details of Amorim’s release clause. Indeed, he has a contract with his current club until the summer of 2026 – like Klopp. That means Liverpool will have to pay compensation for him.
What Liverpool will have to pay to get Amorim to Anfield
The report from portuguese outlet CM Journal states that Amorim’s release clause is two-layered. It is said that domestic clubs would have to pay a whopping £26m to land Amorim. Benfica, or Porto, then.
But for foreign clubs, a smaller fee of £17m is required to land the highly-rated boss. A gaffer described as “one of the best” in the world by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, as he shines at Sporting.
Whether Liverpool are willing to pay that kind of cash for a manager remains to be seen. Jason McAteer said over the weekend that if he was at Liverpool, he would pay £50m for Tottenham boss Postecoglou.
So, a £17m fee for Amorim might actually seem like a bit of a bargain. But, Liverpool will have to work out if that is value for money. If it goes wrong, then it will be deemed a big waste of cash moving forward.
