‘What are you talking about?” Robbie Savage stunned by what Chris Sutton has said about £34m Liverpool player

Chris Sutton has named Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as his second-best player for the year of 2023.

Liverpool, largely, had a year to forget in 2023 as they finished fifth in the Premier League, but the second-half of the year has seen the Reds get back to their best and they finished up top of the pile.

Speaking on BBC 606, both Sutton and Robbie Savage have been debating who the three best players of the year were, and, interestingly, Sutton had Salah ahead of Erling Haaland.

As you can imagine, Savage didn’t quite agree with this ranking, claiming that it was ludicrous to put Salah ahead of Haaland.

Salah ahead of Haaland

Sutton and Savage had a disagreement over the £34m Liverpool star.

“My third is Erling Haaland, it’s not all about goalscoring, Mo Salah is second, the number of goals he scored for Liverpool, he’s been consistent, he’s so great season after season,” Sutton said.

“Hang on, you just had Erling Haaland third saying it’s not about goalscoring, but then you have Salah second because of the goals he has scored, what are you talking about?” Savage said.

“Salah has done it for seven seasons, he’s a goal machine Mo Salah, he’s phenomenal,” Sutton said.

Hard to agree

As much as we love Salah as a player, it is tough to agree with this argument.

The winger has been electric as he always is over the past 12 months, but Haaland has been on another level entirely.

The Norwegian broke almost every scoring record imaginable as City went on to win the treble, while Salah endured his worst league finish since signing for Liverpool as the Reds finished fifth.

These two are undoubtedly two of the best players in the world, but when you’re looking at who had the better 2023, Haaland is the winner here.
