'What a player he is': Micah Richards says he didn't realise how hard £4m Liverpool player actually works

Micah Richards says it was only after watching Liverpool live against Manchester City that he realised how hard one player actually works.

The Reds will take huge belief from their performance against the Premier League champions. Liverpool really took the game to Pep Guardiola’s side in the second-half at Anfield. And they will feel that they should have got the three points.

Several Liverpool players were brilliant. Luis Diaz was sublime until the moment came to have a strike at goal. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk produced yet another captain’s performance.

But it was another player who really managed to impress Micah Richards. The pundit was speaking on The Rest Is Football, and he suggested that he was amazed by what he saw from Harvey Elliott.

“Harvey Elliott, what a player he is. He works so hard for the team. When you’re watching the game on TV, you can always see people’s positions and all that, and the cameras panning from one position to the other; when you’re at the game, you see exactly how hard he works. He was composed in possession, and really worked hard for the team,” he said.

Huge future ahead

It is hard to pick out the most impressive youngster in the Liverpool squad. Obviously, Jurgen Klopp has shown so much faith in his starlets, particularly in recent months.

But it almost seems to be unfair to suggest that Elliott is a young player. He looks so comfortable on the biggest stages. And he thrived in that role on Sunday where Mohamed Salah would usually play.

He never shies away from getting onto the ball and trying to make things happen. But, as Richards suggests, he also backs that up with putting the effort in off the ball.

Elliott looks set to play a massive part in Liverpool’s future based on what he has shown over the last couple of years.

And there is no reason why the £4 million man cannot continue to get so much better in the coming seasons.
