Alan Shearer was full of praise for Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool captain’s match-winning performance against Chelsea in the League Cup final.
The Dutch international scored a 118th-minute winner to secure Jurgen Klopp’s second League Cup title as Liverpool manager, with the Reds managing the feat with an injury-hit squad and multiple academy players in the matchday squad.
Despite this, Van Dijk came up clutch in the dying minutes of extra-time to score the winning goal, with the defender already having one goal ruled out earlier in the game due to a controversial offside decision.

Shearer said on the commentary after Van Dijk’s dramatic late winner in the League Cup final: “What a performance this has been from Virgil van Dijk.
“He’s been a colossal all game, winning tackle after tackle and block after block. He felt hard done in by with the disallowed goal but he responds like that”
Virgil van Dijk earned his redemption arch in Liverpool vs Chelsea
Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesHaving already had a goal ruled out earlier in the game for a more than dubious offside call by VAR, Van Dijk more than deserves the completion of his redemption arch for Liverpool against Chelsea.
The defender, the most senior player on the pitch for Liverpool by some years come to the full-time whistle, was a titan all game for the Reds, who wouldn’t have got across the line against Chelsea without the Dutchman.
Indeed, it was another historic performance from Van Dijk and one that Liverpool fans will remember for years to come, and the defender earned the chance to score the winning goal after what happened earlier in the game.
