112 Sol Campbell made one of the most controversial transfers of all-time when he left Tottenham for Arsenal back in 2001.
The ‘outstanding’ defender crossed the north London divide in 2001, and even 20 years later that move remains a sour note for many Tottenham supporters.
Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing some of the biggest traitors in football history, and, of course, Campbell came up.
Interestingly, Carragher shed some new light on the Campbell move, claiming that he had other options around that time, stating that his own team, Liverpool, were actually in for him.

Carragher spoke about the centre-back potentially coming to Liverpool.
“That one, I don’t have much sympathy with that one Sol Campbell because he had other options. You can’t go to your biggest rivals. I think he could’ve gone to Barcelona, I know we were in for him at the time, Liverpool, it wasn’t the only thing he could’ve done,” Carragher said.

This is a very interesting potential move to ponder.
Let’s not forget, back in 2001, Liverpool had just won an alternate treble and were ready to push on for a Premier League title.
If Campbell came in, the Reds could’ve gone to another level, while he also would’ve been able to preserve his Tottenham status, and Arsenal probably never would’ve gone Invincible.
Of course, this is all hypothetical, but it is intriguing to ponder some of the potential butterfly effects if Campbell did head to Anfield rather than Highbury.
Even Carragher himself would’ve had his career affected. The Liverpool legend was a right-back at this time, and if Campbell came into Anfield, perhaps Carragher never would’ve made that transition to centre-half.
This is certainly one of the bigger ‘what if?’ transfers in Premier League history.
