144 Mike Dean has shared what the VAR told the referee right after the Diogo Jota penalty incident in the Liverpool vs Newcastle United clash last night.
Liverpool picked up a deserved 4-2 win over Newcastle thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones.
Salah bagged two on the night after missing a penalty in the first half. But it was the Egyptian’s second effort from the spot that has caused controversy.
Indeed, Diogo Jota went down inside the penalty area after initially taking the ball around Martin Dubravka.
Dubravka’s arm made minimal contact with Jota’s foot but the Portuguese forward took a couple of extra strides before going to ground.
Referee Anthony Taylor instantly pointed to the spot and the VAR stuck with the on-field decision.
It came at a crucial stage in the game as Newcastle had just been offered a lifeline as Sven Botman’s effort made it 3-2.
And while speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game last night, former Premier League referee Mike Dean shared what the VAR said just moments after the incident.

Dean initially stated that he felt a penalty shouldn’t have been awarded. But the former referee added that once it had been given, it was difficult to overturn due to the contact from Dubravka on Jota’s foot.
“I think we’ve heard Stuart Attwell just then on VAR, well we have anyway, there’s clear contact by the left elbow of Dubravka on the foot of Jota,” Dean said. “So, once he’s given the penalty it is hard to overturn.”
It’s fair to say that this decision has raised a few eyebrows, with Ian Wright slamming Jota on social media.
It was a baffling moment in the game as it was easier for Jota to put the ball in the net rather than go to the ground.
