Trent Alexander-Arnold put in an exceptional display on Sunday as Liverpool beat Fulham 4-3 at Anfield.
The 25-year-old netted a stunning free-kick to open the scoring and then popped up with the winner after a thrilling 90 minutes of action.
Jurgen Klopp has managed to find a suitable role for Alexander-Arnold in his Liverpool side over the past few months.
The Englishman has been given the license to drift into midfield in an inverted full-back role, allowing the Reds to utilise his exceptional passing range.
But Alexander-Arnold played the final 20 minutes of Sunday’s game in a conventional midfield role to help Liverpool come back from 3-2 down.
And Shay Given believes the Liverpool ace is ‘wasted’ at right-back.
Given says Alexander-Arnold is ‘wasted’ at right-back
Speaking on Optus Sport, Given explained why he believes Liverpool should move Alexander-Arnold into midfield.
“That’s De Bruyne-like,” he said. “I think he’s wasted at right-back, I really do.
“At some stage, at Liverpool, he’ll become a midfielder and they’ll buy a right-back because this talent, I think at times, is actually wasted.
“De Bruyne plays them passes on a daily basis and you think ‘what a player he is’. Trent has got the exact same ability to find the right pass.”
Fulham boss Marco Silva lauded Alexander-Arnold’s strike as ‘world-class’ after yesterday’s game.
The defender continues to earn plaudits for his displays over the past few weeks after he also netted against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
It does feel like the right time for Klopp to move to Liverpool star into midfield.
He’s impressed for England in the position and he helped to turn the game around for the Reds yesterday.
Of course, it would leave Liverpool without a recognised right-back for the time being. But Joe Gomez has shown he can provide a solid enough option there.
It’s no secret that Alexander-Arnold struggles with the defensive side of his game at times. But moving him into the middle of the park would prevent teams from targeting him as a full-back.
