As if it were 2009 all over again, Xabi Alonso seems to be the most wanted man in world football right now.
The Bayer Leverkusen manager is the hottest property in coaching right now, and with Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Barcelona all looking for new gaffers this summer, Alonso will be the subject of a few offers you would imagine.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Michael Owen has been discussing Alonso’s next career move, and while he says that he’d like to see him at Liverpool, he acknowledges that it would be a big risk to go in at Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp after such a stellar job.

Owen spoke about the 42-year-old manager.
“Both teams I would be surprised if they don’t go for him, you don’t get many chances to go to the elite clubs. You know what I’m going to say you go for Liverpool, but I understand why the Bayern one would be more of a guarantee of progress in your career and replacing Jurgen Klopp would be very difficult,” Owen said.
Bayern Munich is much safer
Owen is spot on here, Xabi Alonso will be taking a huge risk if he joins Liverpool.
Think about it, he will potentially be replacing the club’s greatest manager ever after, in an ideal world, winning a Premier League title, while if he joined Bayern Munich, he’d be joining a team that is underperforming under an unpopular manager.
Going into Bayern would be a really easy job, Alonso leaving Bayer Leverkusen should give them a clear path back to Bundesliga glory, while the squad is strong enough to compete in the Champions League too.
If Alonso wants to cement himself as a top manager in the long-term, perhaps his best next step would be to go to Bayern Munich.
