'Unfortunately for us': Joel Matip says 27-year-old player Liverpool released is actually a very 'big threat'

Liverpool take on AC Milan in Dubai this afternoon, and Joel Matip knows his side will have to be aware of Divock Origi‘s ‘big threat’.

The Belgian was on Liverpool’s books for eight years. He was never a regular, but he come up with a few big goals and helped them win both, the Premier League and the Champions League during his time as a Red.

At the end of his contract last summer, Origi was released. He joined AC Milan on a free transfer.

Joel Matip says Divock Origi is a ‘big threat’ ahead of Liverpool vs AC Milan

Origi decided to leave Liverpool in the summer in search of regular game time elsewhere. Unfortunately for him. that hasn’t quite gone to plan.

Since joining AC Milan, the 27-year-old has started just four games in all competitions. That’s about the same amount of game time he would’ve had if he signed a new deal at Liverpool, which is a shame.

However, with Olivier Giroud still at the World Cup and Zlatan Ibrahimovic not back from his injury yet, Origi is set to start against his old Liverpool pals in Dubai this afternoon.

He will come up against Matip and co, and the Cameroonian knows how big of a threat Origi is.

Asked about the prospect of facing the Belgian, Matip told Liverpool’s official website: “Unfortunately for us because he’s always a big threat.

“But hopefully, we can handle him! Of course [it’ll be good] to get some minutes into the legs and to get in better shape.”

Liverpool have had a shocking start to the season.

The Reds have won just six of their first 14 Premier League games and are already 15 points behind leaders, Arsenal. Their mini-pre-season of sorts in Dubai didn’t get off to a great start either, as Lyon beat them 3-1.

Something has to change for Liverpool for them to get back their best. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that a win against AC Milan tonight could give them the spark they need.

However, we’re sure Origi would love nothing more than to score a couple of goals and beat the side that let him go in the summer.
