'Underrated': Dirk Kuyt now thinks fans didn't quite appreciate how good £18m player was at Liverpool

Dirk Kuyt has now been reminiscing about his time at Liverpool and discussing some old teammates he had at the club like Javier Mascherano.

Kuyt was speaking on ‘The Official Liverpool FC Podcast’ and was asked about any underrated teammates he played with.

And although Kuyt also mentioned Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Liverpool striker thought Mascherano was particularly understated.

Kuyt mentioned that the £18m signing quickly became so important to that Liverpool side at the time, and thought fans might overlook the Argentinian’s role.

He said: “I played with many great players and I think Xabi Alonso, Mascherano, Mascherano was quite underrated at this Liverpool time because he was such an important player in that team.

“But also when we became second in the Premier League we had that year after with Xabi leaving, Mascherano leaving, but also, people forget that [Alvaro] Arbeloa was leaving, and I thought he was also a very important player.”

Of course, Liverpool may still make use of such a tenacious midfielder today.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still being linked with a January move for Fluminense midfielder Andre, in a saga that has continued since the summer.

Liverpool were determined to land a defensive midfielder, and signed Wataru Endo towards the end of the window.

However, given Endo hasn’t been playing a starting role, speculation has naturally continued.

And whilst Kuyt may now struggle to get into this Liverpool team with all of their dazzling forwards, a player like Mascherano would be a perfect fit.

After a frustrating draw against Luton Town on Sunday, Liverpool now travel to Toulouse in the Europa League this week.

And it’ll certainly be interesting to see if Klopp does hand Darwin Nunez an immediate chance to improve his finishing.

Jamie Carragher couldn’t defend the forward after his glaring misses against Luton, and the striker must now be determined to channel his good performances into consistent goals.

There’s so much to like about this Liverpool team this season, but it still hasn’t quite all come together at once.
