The Spaniard is one of the most exciting young managers in the world right now. He is doing an amazing job at Bayer Leverkusen, and Liverpool and Bayern Munich are both battling for his signature. The German giants think they have an advantage over the Reds.
Bayern Munich think they can beat Liverpool to Xabi Alonso’s signature
Liverpool and Bayern Munich will both be without a manager at the end of the season.
Jurgen Klopp announced last month that he will be stepping down in the summer, while Bayern Munich have decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the same time.
The two clubs are among the biggest in Europe and they are attractive options for any manager. Luckily for Xabi Alonso, he can have his pick.
Liverpool would love to appoint Alonso as Klopp’s successor, but Bayern think they have a ‘trump card’ over the Merseysiders thanks to their old CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Falk wrote in his Fact Files today: “It is no longer a secret that Xabi Alonso is the top candidate to succeed Jürgen Klopp. But, FC Bayern now also has Alonso as number one on their wish list.
“The fact that Tuchel is still allowed to be coach until the summer also has to do with the fact that Bayern is waiting for Alonso. The Bayern bosses are self-confident because so far they have gotten every coach they wanted. Even Pep Guardiola.
“They have a trump card in former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Because Rummenigge always kept in touch with Alonso and is considered a confidant of the Spaniard. So, Liverpool have got a serious competitor.”
Liverpool need to have backup options
It is clear that Xabi Alonso is the man Liverpool want to appoint this summer, but a move will not be straightforward.
Bayern Munich will do everything they can to lure Alonso to the Allianz Arena, and there is a chance the Spaniard could pick them over the Reds.
Liverpool need to have a few other options for the Anfield hot seat in case Alonso decides against joining them. There aren’t many as exciting as the Spaniard, but it would be wise to have alternatives.
It will be interesting to see how this story pans out in the coming months. Whoever ends up getting Alonso, in our opinion, will have a hugely successful few years ahead of them.
