Ally McCoist has now been praising Andy Robertson and Liverpool for their ability to still use the long ball this season.
The pundit was speaking on talkSPORT and was very happy to see that Jurgen Klopp hadn’t forgotten an out-of-fashion part of the game.
Photo by Fran Santiago/Getty ImagesMcCoist celebrated Robertson’s long passing range and harped back to the days when he was feeding Sadio Mane at Liverpool.
He said (1/11, 7:22am): “Do you know who I think arguably are the best at playing the long ball? I think they’re tremendous at it, Liverpool.
“Liverpool are brilliant, particularly when they had [Sadio] Mane and did the diagonal. But Andy Robertson who’s playing in that left-back position fires it to [Mohamed] Salah.
“It’s a long pass, it’s still a pass. I think Liverpool have got the balance really well.
“Of course they’ve got players who can knock it about and pass the ball, but at the same time, if they’ve got an opportunity to turn you with a long direct ball, they’ll turn you.”
And this flexibility in Liverpool’s game could prove crucial in an exciting title race this season.
McCoist thinks Robertson’s passing is still a joy to watch at Liverpool
Despite a brilliant start, it was a surprise that the likes of Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker didn’t even mention Liverpool in their title tips.
Perhaps the serious injury to £10m Robertson may have caused some to down-play Liverpool’s chances.

But Liverpool fans will hope that their added quality in midfield can help see the side through the full-back’s absence.
McCoist may have been praising Robertson’s passing range, but Liverpool do now have a new signing who looks like a modern day Xabi Alonso.
Dominik Szoboszlai has surpassed all expectations and has been phenomenal at Anfield thus far.
And although Liverpool had little hesitation, it has now been revealed why so many clubs decided not to pursue Szoboszlai this summer.
