Matip suffered a season-ending injury in the game against Sheffield United.
Liverpool received bad news this week when it was confirmed that Joël Matip will miss the rest of the season due to a ruptured ACL. It’s never a good time to get that kind of news, but it is especially unfortunate as Liverpool barrel headfirst into the festive period.
It’s no surprise that the rumours have began about possible players who can fill that hole in the January transfer window.
Jürgen Klopp and FSG have shown that they’re only interested in the winter transfer window for dire emergencies or to complete currently in-progress negotiations. Right now, Klopp has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and Jarell Quansah to fill those two center-back positions.
The players who are said to be on Liverpool’s shortlist for a mid-season boost include Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Lacroix has 18 months left on his contract and may be on the hunt for greener pastures. The word is that they won’t let him for for less than £30m. Guehi has three years left on his contract, and Roy Hodgson will be unlikely to let him leave before the end of the season.
One more defensive injury for Liverpool and I might be inclined to believe that there might be some movement in the transfer market. Considering the injury records for both Konaté and Gomez, that is too hard to believe. However, as it stands, it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing new faces in January.
