Pre-Match

The Liverpool FC Women take a break in WSL competition as they head to the northeast to face WSL Championship side Newcastle in the Women’s League Cup competition. No surprise that Matt Beard makes several changes from the side that lost to Everton the last time out. He rolls out a more attacking 4-3-3 as his side look to get some positive rhythm.

Nimah Fahey comes in to captain the side, with Gemma Evans and Yana Daniels both given starts as well in a the back four. Zara Shaw is given her first start of the season after starring in midfield for England in the U17 World Cup this fall. Up top, both Mia Enderby and Cornelia Kapocs have an opportunity to impress.

First Half

Liverpool come roaring down the field straight off the kickoff and almost find the back of the net. Two saves from close range keep the Reds out of the net.

Cornelia Kapocs scores a beautiful backheel goal from close range after a wonderful feed from Grace Fisk. Flag is up, though, and the goal is called back. Should be illegal to chalk off such a nice looking goal.

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! Zara Shaw gets her first for the Reds from a spectacular effort from distance! She receives the ball midway inside the Newcastle half and no one steps to her so she drives towards the box. As she gets to the top of the D she unleashes a rocket that beats the goalkeeper to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead!

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! Just a minute later Mia Enderby is sent through at the midfield stripe with a great pass from Cornelia Kapocs. Enderby outpaces everyone with the ball and coolly slots the ball past the advancing goalkeeper as she enters the box!

Great work almost sees Liverpool get a third. Olivia Smith takes the ball down the left and flicks the ball past a defender for the run of Cornelia Kapocs. The Swedish striker gets inside the left side of the box and drives the ball towards goal, but it is stopped by a last ditch block by a defender just before heading into the goal.

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! Olivia Smith with some great strength and tricky footwork after receiving a ball at the top of the box to take the ball past her defender. She calmly side-foots the ball past the keeper for the third goal of the first half.

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! It’s a fourth in the first half for the Reds as Mia Enderby does great work down the right to run onto the ball play it first time across face of goal. Cornelia Kapocs made the run and finished a simple touch from close range.

Second Half

Liverpool with a line change to start the second half. Leanne Kiernan, Ceri Holland, Taylor Hinds, and Hannah Silcock all come on to start the half. Olivia Smith, Marie Höbinger, Gemma Evans, and Grace Fisk are all given a rest.

Yana Daniels switches over the right back, with Hinds slotting into her usual left-sided role. Kiernan looks to be playing through the middle with Kapocs on the left and Enderby on the right.

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! It’s Mia Enderby with the brace after a fortuitous bounce sees the ball fall to her. Ceri Holland tried to drive a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but it is blocked and Leanne Kiernan battles with a defender for the ball. It ends up with another defender, who misplays the ball to Enderby. The young attacker hits it first time into the net.

Gemma Bonner is brought on for Niamh Fahey in the 65th minute. Nice to see Fahey get a run out.

Mia Enderby is down and has her calf looked at. Looks like she will be ok after some treatment.

Newcastle mount some attempts as the second half wear on, and they get a consolation goal in the 88th minute. It’s a great strike to the far past from inside the box to beat Teagan Micah and deny Liverpool a clean sheet.

GOAL LIVERPOOL!!! Leanne Kiernan gets a sixth goal for the Reds in extra time. She takes a feed from Zara Shaw on the right side of the box and quickly releases a shot with a challenge flying in. It’s perfectly placed in the far corner, leaving no chance for the goalkeeper.

That’ll do it as the referee blows for full time.

Final Thoughts

It was a cup match against lower league competition, but it was really great to see Liverpool really put the pedal to the metal on the attacking end and actually get some finishes. Zara Shaw and Mia Enderby were both fantastic, with the teens combining for three goals and two assists. Cornelia Kapocs also had a goal and two assists.

Players will now head out for an international break. Liverpool will be back in action on December 8 when they head out to take on Manchester United.
