Indeed, every single day we hear about the brilliance of the likes of Mo Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, behind every great player is an unsung hero, and one player who fits into that category at Anfield is Joe Gomez.
The England international has been very useful this season in terms of his versatility, filling in at both right-back and centre-half.
Speaking on Liverpool’s official YouTube channel, Phil Thompson has been discussing the 26-year-old’s performances this season, and he reckons that whenever Gomez has played he’s been top class.

Thompson shared his verdict on the defender.
‘I’ve been really pleased with Joe Gomez, when he has played he’s been top class. His demeanour and attitude has been top class. When he comes on I’ve seen him come on and try to play that midfield role in the centre and it’s really gone well,” Thompson said.
Gomez can be brilliant
Joe Gomez is a player whose qualities shouldn’t be forgotten.
Yes, injuries have completely derailed his career over the past few years, but let’s not forget, before that, he was arguably Virgil van Dijk’s best defensive partner in a Premier League title winning season and a Champions League winning run.
When he’s fit and in a rhythm there really aren’t many defenders out there better than Gomez, and with Joel Matip out injured for the foreseeable future, Gomez is a player that Liverpool may need to rely on more and more.
Luckily, there haven’t been any signs of injury issues for Gomez for a little while, so hopefully, this is the start of a new era for the defender and he can re-establish himself as one of Liverpool’s more important players, because, as Thompson says, he’s been very decent this term.
