Ben White has made plenty of headlines over the international break without even kicking a football.
Indeed, the Arsenal defender has been at the centre of something of a media storm after Gareth Southgate revealed that the defender refused an England call-up.
White caused a furore by refusing to join up with the Three Lions’ squad this time around, and speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing White’s decision.
Carragher says that he can sympathise with White’s decision a bit, claiming that he isn’t going to play for England at right-back as he’s not as good as many of his peers, stating that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is better than White.

Jamie Carragher spoke about the Arsenal star and some of his England rivals.
“Rightly so Ben White is fourth or fifth choice to be totally honest. He’s not better than Trent, Walker, Reece James or Trippier,” Carragher said.
“Number one, he’s not going to play anyway. I don’t think so, he doesn’t even play centre-back for his club. He’s probably thinking he can relax and get ready for Arsenal.”
Ben White is this generation’s Jamie Carragher
In a lot of ways, White is this generation’s Jamie Carragher.
Carragher was in a very similar situation almost 20 years ago. He was a peripheral figure in the England squad, and he considered early retirement from international duty due to a lack of minutes as he sat behind the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and John Terry in the England reckoning.
White knows that he’s probably not going to be a regular starter for England at this moment in time, so why not focus on his club career and his personal life rather than jetting across the world just to not play?
White’s decision is certainly controversial, but, in a way, we can understand it.
