'Think that's cheap': Richard Keys says Liverpool should pay £50m for 58-year-old boss if they want him

Richard Keys believes that Liverpool should be prepared to pay £50 million to appoint one manager should they decide that he is the person they want to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

There remains a big question mark over who will become Liverpool manager in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp set to step aside after an amazing spell at Anfield.

It is one of the biggest jobs in world football. However, it is potentially one of the most daunting, with whoever comes in facing a monumental task trying to follow Klopp.

Richard Keys himself suggested that he believed that Xabi Alonso had already agreed to become Liverpool manager after doing an outstanding job with Bayer Leverkusen.

That would prove to be wide of the mark, with Alonso confirming that he is staying with the Bundesliga leaders next year.

Liverpool told £50 million would be cheap for their next manager

There are other names in the frame, with Ange Postecoglou one of those linked with a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool are interested in Postecoglou, who has won a lot of admirers with the work he has done at Tottenham this season.

Spurs are surely going to be desperate to ensure that the 58-year-old goes nowhere. However, perhaps Liverpool should make Tottenham an offer they simply cannot afford to refuse.

Speaking on beIN Sports, Keys claimed that £50 million is not too much to spend if Liverpool decide that he is the ideal successor to Klopp.

“If Liverpool identify Postecoglou as Klopp’s successor, and he costs £50 million, I think that’s cheap. Why is there a hesitancy from clubs to pay for backroom staff? Because they’re significant individuals,” he said.

“But the gain is what he brings to the club. And ultimately, if you believe him to be the right man, you have a confidence that he’ll deliver success. Therefore, that £50 million becomes insignificant, doesn’t it?”

Paying so much would only pile the pressure on

You can understand Keys’ general point. Ultimately, if Liverpool make the right choice when it comes to finding Klopp’s successor, they are going to be worth a lot more than £50 million.

But clearly, it is not common for clubs to spend those kind of fees on a manager. And with that, it would only pile the pressure on Postecoglou if they spent anything like £50 million to bring him in.

There is going to be enough pressure on whoever comes in. Klopp has managed to add his name to the list of managerial greats who have patrolled the Anfield touchline.

And if Liverpool considered spending anywhere near £50 million on his replacement, they would have to be absolutely certain that they have got the right name without a shadow of a doubt.
