'Think he's one of the best': Paul Merson amazed by 20-year-old Liverpool player; he's 'priceless' to Klopp

Paul Merson has suggested that Harvey Elliott is priceless to Liverpool, as he suggested that he is one of the best impact players in the Premier League.

Harvey Elliott proved to be the Reds’ hero as they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend. It was the winger who scored the stoppage-time winner for the visitors.

The 20-year-old was brought off the bench during the second-half with the Reds struggling to find their best form.

Paul Merson lauds Harvey Elliott

Owen Hargreaves noticed how all the Liverpool players looked to Elliott after his introduction. And it is not the first time that Elliott has been really impressive after coming off the bench for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Certainly, Paul Merson has been hugely impressed by how Elliott has played this season, telling Soccer Saturday (broadcast on 16/12; 12:29) that he is a huge asset to the Reds.

“This lad, Elliott comes on. I think he’s one of the best impact players in the Premier League,” he said. “When he comes on for Liverpool, they become a better team. I’m not saying they’re a better team when he starts the game, but when he comes on, he’s one of them players that gets really involved very quickly and has a say in the game. I think that’s priceless for Liverpool as well.”

Liverpool winger is knocking on Jurgen Klopp’s door

Of course, Elliott has got one of the most daunting tasks in the Premier League. His best role appears to be on the right-hand side. But obviously, that means that he is trying to get into the team ahead of Mohamed Salah.

Salah is one of the all-time greats in the Premier League. And, ominously for Liverpool’s rivals, he is showing few signs of reaching anything like the end of his peak.

The pair were on the pitch together for those key final moments against Palace. Salah bagged the equaliser. And the Egyptian gave Elliott the ball for his goal.

It will be interesting to see whether Klopp does feel that using Elliott as a substitute is getting the best out of him. Obviously, he cannot do a lot more to send a message to his manager with his form.

But it may be that he is playing so well as a substitute that the Liverpool boss does not want to change anything right now.
