Paul Merson has suggested that Liverpool new boy Fabio Carvalho could be deployed as a striker against Manchester United on Monday.

The rivalry between the Reds and the Red Devils has always been a fierce one. The tables have turned over the last six years, with Liverpool being the more dominant side, but this season has been horrific for both clubs so far.

Manchester United are stuck at the bottom of the league table after losing each of their first two games. Brighton beat them 2-1 at Old Trafford on the opening day before Brentford hammered them 4-0 last weekend.

Liverpool could well have been stuck on zero points as well, but they managed to secure a point each in their first two games of the season.

Liverpool are without a recognised striker at the moment. Their big-money summer signing, Darwin Nunez, was sent off for a moment of madness last weekend, and he will miss the game at Old Trafford as a result.

Merson is still irked about Liverpool letting Sadio Mane leave as the Senegal star would’ve been perfect for them now. With him gone, the pundit has no idea who will play up top for Liverpool on Monday. He wondered if it could be young Carvalho, who is an attacking midfielder by trade.

He wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Sadio Mane is a huge miss for Liverpool. Why sell him for £30 million when you could’ve kept him around for a year and once again fought on all fronts, like they did last season?

“With Roberto Firmino injured and Darwin Nunez suspended, they have no one to come off the bench and make an impact as a substitute.

“I have no clue who is going to play up front with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah – maybe young Fabio Carvalho will get thrown into the fray at Old Trafford?”

Despite their terrible start to the season, Liverpool will go into the game against Manchester United as the favourites.

The Reds weren’t awful in either of their first two games. On another day, they could’ve easily won those fixtures, but at the same time, they could’ve lost them both as well.

However, the one thing everybody will agree on is the fact that they are still an incredibly strong side. They have the quality to blow teams out of the water, and considering how poor United have been, Klopp could well make another statement at Old Trafford.

It will be interesting to see who will play up top for Liverpool on Saturday. If it’s young Carvalho, who was signed for just £5 million (The Athletic) this summer, it will be a huge surprise.
