'The strange thing for me': Pundit says he's completely confused by one Liverpool player after Burnley win

Dean Saunders has admitted he is becoming increasingly confused by one Liverpool player after the Reds beat Burley 3-1 on Saturday.

Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table with a victory over the Clarets at Anfield. Goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez secured the three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Nunez did brilliantly to make the points safe, managing to get his head on a cross from Harvey Elliott which was seemingly going behind him. The Uruguayan now has eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season.

Darwin Nunez continues to divide opinion despite Liverpool win

Once again however, Nunez was not as clinical as he would have liked to have been. The 24-year-old had five attempts on goal during the game, according to Whoscored.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Dean Saunders admitted that he is conflicted about the striker, noting that he has the potential to do the ridiculous.

“The strange thing for me is the more I watch Nunez, the more confused I am. He scores an unbelievable header, like he’s wrapped his neck around a header that’s behind him. And then he has two easy chances and misses them,” he said.

The potential is obvious

There is absolutely no question that Nunez has enjoyed a much better second season on Merseyside so far. However, no one needs to tell the striker that there is still plenty of work ahead.

Only Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Nicolas Jackson are performing worse against their expected goals tally this season than Nunez, according to FBRef.

Nunez averages more than a shot per game more than any other player in the division. So his tally of eight goals is still slightly underwhelming.

Liverpool fans have stuck by Nunez throughout his time with the club. And there is clearly the quality for the former Benfica man to become a world-class goalscorer.

But, as Saunders suggests, there is still a big question mark over whether Nunez will realise that full potential.
