Liverpool’s search for their new manager has taken an unexpected left-turn this weekend.

Indeed, the Reds were rocked by the news that Xabi Alonso will be staying at Bayer Leverkusen next season, and now, the Merseyside club may need to rethink their shortlist.

Liverpool have had to draw up a new list of candidates after missing out on Alonso, and according to John Cross, there may be a very interesting name at the top of the Reds’ list now.

Liverpool’s new top contender

Speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages Podcast, Cross stated that Ruben Amorim may well be the new preferred choice at Liverpool.

According to Cross, Amorim may well be at the top of Liverpool’s list, but he also says that Roberto De Zerbi won’t have a lack of interest at Liverpool and around Europe.

“He’s doing fantastic things. He’s very tactical and very fascinating, and I think that maybe, just maybe, he is the preferred choice, but Roberto De Zerbi certainly won’t have any lack of interested or willing parties either,” Cross said.

Ruben Amorim could be incredible

Ruben Amorim could be exactly what Liverpool need.

Previously described as ‘one of the best managers in the world’, Amorim ticks so many boxes for the Reds.

Not only is he a fantastic tactician who likes to play attacking football, he’s also fantastic at developing young players.

With the likes of Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah all knocking on the door of being superstars, they need the right manager who will harness and harvest these young stars’ talents, and Amorim will certainly tick that box.

Amorim looks to be a great manager in the making, but whether or not he’s ready for a move to a club like Liverpool is up for debate.

The Reds may well bring in the Portuguese gaffer as their next boss.
