Stan Collymore has given his verdict on speculation linking Xabi Alonso with the soon-to-be vacant managerial role at Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will step down as the Liverpool manager at the end of the season.
So, what has Stan Collymore said about Liverpool and Xabi Alonso? Let’s take a look.
Xabi Alonso backed to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Well, Stan Collymore believes that Xabi Alonso is the perfect manager to take charge of Liverpool for next season and beyond.
The former Liverpool striker has noticed a sign that Alonso could be given the managerial role at Anfield when Jurgen Klopp steps down.
Klopp has announced that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
Journalist Dean Jones has reported in SportsLens that Alonso is the early favourite to take over at the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners. Bayern Munich have also been linked.
Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, is now the manager of Bayer Leverkusen and could lead them to the Bundesliga title this season.

“I saw Fernando Carro, the Leverkusen CEO, came out and said ‘agreements that aren’t on paper are still agreements’, which certainly did nothing to cool speculation.
“Firstly, I am not quite sure why he chose to use those words, but he probably knows the position the club could find itself in. If Liverpool reaches out to Alonso, no disrespect to Bayer Leverkusen, but I am sure he will go to Carro and tell him he wants to leave.
“From my point of view, I really don’t think anything Leverkusen say will make the slightest bit of difference. Alonso is the only man I see replacing Klopp at Anfield.”
My View: Liverpool should consider all options
While Xabi Alonso is doing a brilliant job at Bayer Leverkusen, I do not think that Liverpool should go all out for him.
I think that FSG have to consider other options as well. It would not be a bad idea for the Liverpool owners to ask Jurgen Klopp for his opinion as well.
Yes, Alonso is doing well at the moment, but the 42-year-old is very young in terms of his managerial career.
Liverpool are used to challenging for the Premier League title and competing in the UEFA Champions League, so the Reds need to bring in a manager who can continue that.
Just look at what happened at Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson. They have been stuck in the ‘project phase’ for over 10 years now.
