Takumi Minamino has been hailed as the best right-back in the world, just over 18 months after Liverpool sold him to Monaco.
The Japan international has found his feet again at the Stade Louis II. He is still an attacking midfielder, but against Lens in their win last weekend, the former Liverpool man played in a slightly different position.

Takumi Minamino spent two-and-a-half years at Liverpool after joining them from RB Salzburg.
The versatile attacker played 55 times for the Reds, scored 14 goals and provided three assists. He won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup before Jurgen Klopp allowed him to leave.
Minamino joined Monaco in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £15.5 million (Goal). He didn’t have the greatest debut season there, but he has looked really good this term.
Against Lens at the weekend, Minamino started on the right wing and scored two goals. He was pushed back at times by the hosts, which meant he had to do some work as a right-back as well.
Minamino’s teammate, Aleksandr Golovin, was really impressed with the Japan international. He hailed him as ‘the best right-back’ in the world and even compared him to Brazil icon Cafu.
The Russian said in a video uploaded by Monaco on X: “We now have the new Cafu. The best right back, not only in Ligue 1 but in the world at the moment.
“Give me the name of a right-back who can score two goals. Who?”

A lot was expected of Takumi Minamino when he joined Liverpool back in 2020.
The Japanese attacker was a part of that exciting RB Salzburg team that had the likes of Erling Haaland and Hwang Hee-chan. That side really impressed everyone in the Champions League at the time.
That’s when Minamino caught Liverpool’s eye, but he just wasn’t able to deliver on a consistent basis under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
At Monaco this season, Minamino is having a fine campaign. He has scored seven goals and provided five assists in just 17 starts, which is a fantastic return.
Things have worked out for all parties, haven’t they? Liverpool made a profit on Minamino, he’s playing regularly now and Monaco are reaping the rewards. All’s well that ends well.
