197 Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in fantastic form lately.
The Liverpool ace has scored three goals in his last three games, and he’s arguably playing the best football of his career in his newfound free hybrid midfield role.
The England international has been utterly brilliant as of late, but speaking on Premier Sports (6/12/23 9:35PM), Damien Delaney has shared some worries about the 25-year-old.
Delaney says that while Alexander-Arnold is working well in that new role for now, he isn’t sure about the long-term sustainability of the right-back playing in this way with such a lack of discipline.
Alexander-Arnold’s role not sustainable
Delaney gave his verdict on the Liverpool star and the way he’s been playing lately.
“Trent has come into the midfield as well to help out, but the jury is still out on that one whether that is the way forward. It is working because Liverpool are winning games, but I don’t know if it’s sustainable the way they are doing it. He’s looked at City and they have a definite way of doing that, Trent isn’t as disciplined as City are, he drifts and he’s on that left wing, but I think Klopp is very liberal with that,” Delaney said.
Remains to be seen
As Delaney says, the jury is out on this one.
On one hand, Alexander-Arnold is playing brilliantly at the moment, but, then again, this role does come with its risks, and once opposition teams start to figure out how to deal with it, it could become a huge issue.
Of course, we all love to see tactical innovation and Alexander-Arnold’s new role has been a joy to behold, but, at the same time, there’s a reason why a more traditional defence has been the norm for so long in this game.
Time will tell whether or not this way of playing is sustainable for Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold.
