Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were both critical of Luis Diaz during the first-half of the Carabao Cup final as the Liverpool forward needlessly gave away a free-kick on the edge of his own penalty area against Chelsea.
Those expecting a tense final where little ultimately ended up separating the two sides were proven right, with both sides having a goal ruled out for offside during the 90 minutes.
It was a frenetic game, often lacking in quality at the vital moment. And Luis Diaz was one of those who definitely contributed to the energy, with the Colombian starting alongside Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott in the forward line.
Gary Neville criticises Luis Diaz after early foul
Diaz always works hard for the Reds. So it was no surprise when he was back helping Jurgen Klopp’s men defend. However, he did land Liverpool in a spot of bother in the first 11 minutes, when he bundled an opponent over out wide, giving away a free-kick just outside the penalty area.

“That’s crazy. What’s Diaz doing,” Neville said.
“I mean, you could see that foul before he made it. Liverpool have done well. The goalkeeper’s done well initially to deal with that first set-piece. Because that’s something Chelsea will look to put pressure on the goalkeeper. And then Luis Diaz does that,” Carragher added.
Liverpool’s fight clear to see with squad stretched
Thankfully for Liverpool, Chelsea were unable to make much of the free-kick.
Diaz can prove to be erratic at times. He works so hard for the team, and he has the ability to make some magic things happen. However, that quality does not always shine through as he does make some rash decisions.
What is in no doubt is how spirited Liverpool’s performance was considering the various injury issues that Klopp is currently having to deal with. And Diaz certainly played his part.
