Liverpool really couldn’t make anything happen against Manchester United on Sunday.
The Reds had countless shots from distance that didn’t test the goalkeeper, but in terms of creating clear-cut chances, the Merseyside club were lacking.
That ability to force United’s defence to shift just wasn’t there as Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Luis Diaz did the same things over and over again.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Don Hutchison has been discussing the Reds’ attacking struggles, and he says that he couldn’t help but think during the game how much Liverpool were missing Roberto Firmino.

Hutchison spoke about the £29m man and how Liverpool miss him.
“Don’t you think that just goes to show how good Roberto Firmino was. Football IQ, That’s all I was thinking about when I was watching that game footballing IQ to lead the play, Darwin Nunez doesn’t have that yet. He’s more chaotic, Liverpool fans love him for it, but he’s gone quiet, Luis Diaz has gone quiet, Gakpo has gone quiet, so they’re relying on Salah,” Hutchison said.
“Firmino has that ability to stand still and hold it for Salah or for Mane, but at Liverpool now, there’s loads of rotation, but it’s too chaotic.”
Not as effective
Say what you will about the incredible firepower Liverpool have at the moment, they’ve not been as effective in attack since shifting away from the false nine strategy.
Roberto Firmino was the perfect link between midfield and attack, and his presence allowed Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to thrive.
The Reds have since switched to using a more traditional number nine, and in games like this, they can come unstuck.
Of course, we can’t question Jurgen Klopp’s ideas – he’s arguably the best manager in the world, but it does feel as though Liverpool probably should’ve signed a like-for-like Firmino replacement before letting him leave on a free in the summer.
