'That's a massive advantage': Merson insists one Liverpool star will get more goals than Arsenal pair combined

Paul Merson believes that one Liverpool player will score more goals by himself than Arsenal pair Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah combined this season.

Arsenal got back to winning ways in some style on Saturday. Mikel Arteta’s side put five past Crystal Palace at the Emirates to match the number of goals they had got across the previous seven games combined.

However, it was not a perfect afternoon for the Gunners. And Gabriel Jesus not getting on the scoresheet is one concern.

Ian Wright has admitted that he would be worried if Jesus, and the club’s other attackers, do not find some form soon. And the Brazilian has now only scored one goal in his last seven appearances.

Arsenal’s strikers have eight league goals between them this season, with Eddie Nketiah contributing five.

And speaking to Sky Sports as he discussed the title race, Paul Merson insisted that Mohamed Salah will be more prolific than the Arsenal pair.

“I think Arsenal are still in the title race. They had a big result the other day and they’re still there and thereabouts, so you have to put them in the equation,” he said.

“But Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah won’t score as many goals between them as Salah – and he is on the right wing. That’s a massive advantage for Liverpool, who will be in the race for a long time if they keep playing as they are.”

Liverpool talisman not the only player in fine form

Jesus brings so much to the Arsenal side. And there is the quality around him to make up for what he perhaps lacks in front of goal. Last season proved that as Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka proved to be prolific.

But with Saka out of sorts and both Martinelli and Odegaard struggling over the campaign, Jesus’ performances are coming under the microscope. Nketiah meanwhile, has not scored in a domestic game since October.

Salah is on 14 goals, so he is some way ahead of the pair. And what would have been particularly worrying for Arsenal over the weekend was Liverpool putting four past Bournemouth without the Egyptian. Diogo Jota has been exceptional since his return from injury. Darwin Nunez also scored twice on the south coast.

So if Arsenal do fall short again this season, many will point to the lack of goals from the strikers as one of the key reasons.
