‘Terrible’: Danny Gabbidon was seriously unimpressed with Liverpool man against Brighton yesterday

Liverpool’s season went from bad to worse yesterday, after suffering a disappointing defeat to Brighton.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side easily dispatched Liverpool, putting three goals past them in the second-half.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Danny Gabbidon was particularly unimpressed with one Liverpool player yesterday.

It was a league debut to forget for winger Cody Gakpo, who has been thrown straight into the side after arriving from PSV Eindhoven.

He was praised before the match, but couldn’t convert that into a good performance against the Seagulls.

Liverpool were without Virgil van Dijk in defence, which always makes a big difference to how they set up.

It meant Ibrahima Konate was partnered by Joel Matip, although the Cameroonian international was substituted after 70 minutes.

Joe Gomez was brought on in his place, but Gabbidon wasn’t pleased with the Liverpool defender’s performance when he came on.

Danny Welbeck easily flicked the ball past him in the box to score Brighton’s third goal.

Gabbidon unimpressed with Liverpool defender Gomez

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Gabbidon said: “Fantastic play from Welbeck! Great finish!

“That was really too easy from Liverpool’s point of view – terrible defending. Joe Gomez should not have been on that side of him [Welbeck].

“That’s game set and match.”

Gomez has very much been Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back for some time now.

He’s had plenty of opportunities to try and cement his place in the team, but never looked particularly convincing.

Gomez drew praise from Pep Guardiola for his performance in the Carabao Cup just before Christmas.

However, Klopp has been urged to move Gomez on, and his performance yesterday won’t have helped his cause.

Although Gabbidon singled out Gomez yesterday, he certainly wasn’t the only Liverpool player who failed to impress.

It was one of the worst performances of the Jurgen Klopp era, and has brought up plenty of questions.

How Liverpool and Klopp respond in the next few weeks will define whether the Reds can once again qualify for the Champions League.
