‘Talked about’: Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool could hire ‘brilliant’ manager if Xabi Alonso doesn’t join

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool could look to bring in Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim should a move for Xabi Alonso fail to materialise.

Xabi Alonso is widely regarded as the favourite to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool have reportedly already offered Alonso a deal which will run until 2027 following positive talks over a move. But with the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid sniffing around, Alonso landing at Liverpool this summer isn’t exactly a foregone conclusion.

Indeed, Gianluca Di Marzio claimed just yesterday that Bayern have moved ahead of the Reds in the race to hire Alonso.

And should Liverpool miss out on hiring their former player, Jamie Carragher believes they could step up their interest in Ruben Amorim

Carragher thinks Liverpool could look at Amorim

Speaking on CBS Sports, the Liverpool legend was asked who should be on his former club’s list should they fail to land Alonso.

“Well, I think it’s not who’s on the list for me, I think of who’d be on the list for Liverpool and what they would be looking at would be maybe the guy at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim,” Carragher said.

“He’s been in that role, he’s been talked about as a young, up-and-coming coach, great pedigree and doing a really brilliant job right now. He’s top of the Portuguese league, so I think he’s the one that seems to be getting linked with Liverpool, along with Xabi Alonso, so it feels like it’s one of those two.”

Fabrizio Romano has already claimed that Amorim has admirers at Liverpool. The Portuguese boss has a £26 million release clause in his contract at Sporting CP and has been linked with a move to England in the past.

Chelsea and Tottenham were said to be considering the 39-year-old last summer.

Amorim has gone from strength to strength with Sporting ever since as he has them sitting top of the Primeira Liga.

While many Liverpool fans would love to see Alonso return to Anfield, it only seems sensible for the club to explore other options.

They could certainly do a lot worse than Amorim, who is one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe right now.
