'Talented': Gary Neville names three former Liverpool players he thinks would've been brilliant at Man United

Gary Neville has named three former Liverpool players who he believes would have excelled at Manchester United.

The Man United legend has been reflecting on the rivalry with Liverpool in the 1990s and named Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp as players who he feels would have benefited from a ‘more professional’ squad at Old Trafford.

Back in 1995/96, Liverpool missed out on a Premier League title after finishing behind the Red Devils and Newcastle United.

Liverpool possessed some brilliant youngsters at the time, with Fowler, Redknapp and McManaman the pick of the bunch.

Of course, as they so often did, United got over the line under Sir Alex Ferguson during that season and lifted the Premier League title.

But Neville believes three Liverpool youngsters could have also excelled at Old Trafford under the Scotsman’s guidance.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville delivered his verdict on Fowler, Redknapp and McManaman.

“At that time Liverpool had a really talented group of players and I don’t dismiss some of them were as talented as we were like McManaman, Fowler, Jamie Redknapp,” he said.

“But their senior players were big drinkers. It was a really talented group at Liverpool.

“There was one year when we were really close to the title, 95/96, but our senior players were more professional and more talented, and I felt if those young Liverpool players had gone into our dressing room and we went into that dressing room.

“I always remember seeing a couple of Liverpool lads in Cheerleaders, I remember the Liverpool lads were over in the corner and the United lads would go home at 1 and they were there until 4am or 5am.”

It’s fair to say that Roy Keane wasn’t in agreement as he felt some of United’s players were just as guilty.

“I disagree with that,” the former United man said. “There were a few nights out with [Lee] Sharpey and we wouldn’t be going home at 1 o’clock.

“I think we are being unfair to the Liverpool lads.”

Whether or not the likes of Fowler, Redknapp and McManaman would have been better off at United will remain an unknown.

But all three enjoyed successful careers and certainly made their mark during their time at Anfield.
