'Stupid': Jeff Stelling calls for football rule change after what happened in Man United vs Liverpool

Both Jeff Stelling and Phil Thompson have been discussing a point of frustration from Manchester United’s win over Liverpool yesterday.

It was a frantic game full of entertainment, and in truth, Jurgen Klopp will probably still be wondering how his side managed to lose.

Erik ten Hag on the other hand will simply be delighted to rid some of the pressure that always follows his job.

Man United will now face Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final on April 20th.

And although Amad Diallo will be available for that game, given his suspension will be served in the league, both Jeff Stelling and Phil Thompson thought it was ‘ridiculous’ that he was sent off.

The pair were speaking on talkSPORT this morning and said the rule which meant players got a yellow card for taking their shirt off when celebrating needed to change.

Both Stelling and Thompson thought a bit of common sense needed to be applied yesterday and said Diallo was doing no harm simply celebrating an important goal.

The pair were utterly convinced that the rule needed to be revisited and that Diallo didn’t deserve to leave the field.

Stelling initially said: “It’s ridiculous. It’s a stupid rule.”

Thompson replied: “Taking a shirt off, come on, it’s nothing. He’s a young lad. It doesn’t matter if it’s him or an experienced player. There is no harm in it, celebrating a goal.

“The law is stupid. It needs to be changed. It needs to have a bit of common sense. These are rules set out by idiots.”

The pair certainly didn’t hold back with their opinion, and in truth, both Liverpool and Manchester United fans probably feel the same on reflection today.

The away fans wouldn’t have had too much sympathy yesterday, but would definitely agree with Stelling and Thompson were it their own player.

And although Diallo will have been fully aware of the rules prior to his second yellow, you can forgive him for being overwhelmed by emotion in that moment.

All that being said, there was a nice moment between Jurgen Klopp and Kobbie Mainoo yesterday.
