'Struggled': Nations media unhappy with £37m Liverpool player last night despite two goal contributions

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo was one of the many Reds in international action this weekend as he lined up against Scotland last night.

Gakpo was selected from the off in the Netherlands’ starting XI and rewarded his manager with two assists as the Dutch ran riot against Scotland.

The £37m Liverpool man started on the left side of the front three. He didn’t get on the scoresheet, but still managed to lay on two goals for his teammates.

However, despite those contributions, it seems the media weren’t too impressed with Gakpo.

Dutch media unimpressed by Cody Gakpo despite Scotland performance

Most Liverpool fans would have expected to see Gakpo’s name up in lights after grabbing two assists.

Indeed, the game is about scoring goals and keeping them out and Gakpo seems to have contributed to a big win for the Netherlands here.

However, Dutch football site Football Oranje got their player ratings out after the game and it’s safe to say they weren’t overly impressed with the Liverpool star.

Giving Gakpo just a 6.5/10, they wrote the following on him:

“Ended the game with two assists but other than that struggled to get involved on the left wing.”

Clearly, it seems the Dutch want more from Gakpo. In fact, the same can be said for most of the team, with the website only giving one player an 8/10 or more despite the big win.

Bizarrely, English football outlet TNT Sports offered up an 8/10 for Gakpo, completely contradicting the ratings given by the Dutch.

For Liverpool, they won’t care too much how Gakpo’s performance was perceived. Key for the Reds now is simply seeing their players return from the break unscathed.

Of course, there was a side story in this one in that Andy Robertson was on the losing side. And we’re pretty sure Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk will have something to say about that back on English soil!
