Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool ended up being the biggest story of the January window as clubs tightened the purse strings a touch.
Despite huge spending in the summer, Premier League clubs decided to keep things in check a bit this winter as hardly any big deals went ahead. Indeed, there was a £700m deficit compared to last year.
However, news of Klopp departing Liverpool in the summer has provided the media with plenty to write about. The Reds are losing the German, as well as his coaching staff, while sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will also leave.
And speaking about Klopp leaving on the latest episode of It’s All Kicking Off, Liverpool journalist Lewis Steele has said that FSG now face a huge problem.

Speaking on the matters for Liverpool, Steele admitted that while things look good for now, there are a few worries for the club.
“Obviously there’s nothing to worry about with those players leaving this summer but three of their core, probably their three best players, Salah, Trent and Van Dijk are all out of contract next summer. There’s nothing to worry about imminently but it could become a problem if they don’t sort themselves out this summer. I wrote a piece comparing Liverpool to a tower of Jenga. It’s not just Klopp being pulled out. It’s Ljinders, Matosz, Kravitz and mainly, just as big as Klopp is the sporting director Jorge Schmadtke. So it’s five really big pieces being pulled out of the tower, it’s been a tower of stability for the last eight and a half years and the envy of Europe really.
“But there are now signs it is starting to shake a bit, the foundations are obviously very good but Mike Gordon who is running this recruitment drive form Boston has got a bit job on his hands to get a sporting director and a manager who work not just together but also in tandem for the good of the club. They’re in a very good state at the moment but there are signs it could get shaky if they don’t get these decisions right,” Steel said.
Big rebuild ahead
This a good observation from Steele and it will be interesting to see just how Liverpool go ahead with their business without Klopp.
We saw when Sir Alex left Manchester United how things can go and FSG will need to make sure they have everything in place as best they can to deal with his exit.
Liverpool are facing a big six to twelve months where, as Steele says, FSG have to get some major decisions right.
If they get just one wrong, then things could quickly crumble.
