'Sloppy': BBC pundit not impressed by 26-year-old Liverpool player last night; he was taking too many touches

Alex Bruce was critical of Joe Gomez during the early stages of Liverpool’s win over Sheffield United on Wednesday, after an error from the defender led to the Blades getting a shot on goal.

Bruce was speaking on BBC Radio Five Live after Caoimhin Kelleher needed to make a really smart save to deny the home side in Chris Wilder’s first game back.

Joe Gomez made his return to the starting lineup on Wednesday, coming in for Kostas Tsimikas. Gomez has become an understudy across the back line. And perhaps his rustiness came to the fore in the very early stages as Sheffield United cleared a corner.

Joe Gomez almost costs Liverpool with sloppy mistake

Gomez was 10 yards inside the Blades’ half, but also the last man back for the visitors. However, he was dispossessed by Cameron Archer who ran through and played in James McAtee.

A deflection meant that McAtee could not quite get the strike away he probably wanted. But take nothing away from Kelleher, he made a brilliant stop.

And Alex Bruce was not impressed by Gomez for the error.

“Well that will get the crowd going. Glorious opportunity for Sheffield United. A sloppy mistake by Gomez. He gives it away, too many touches. He gets robbed by Archer. A good save from Kelleher,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

Reds recover to secure another important win

Had Liverpool conceded from that attack, it would have been a massive moment in the game. Obviously, Sheffield United look to be in big trouble right now. However, the return of Chris Wilder had the potential to inspire everyone.

And had they gone a goal up that early, it would have been the boost they desperately need.

Thankfully for Liverpool, they were able to take the three points with them. They were ruthless when they needed to be and got the job done.

Gomez also improved as the contest went on. And that will encourage Jürgen Klopp with Liverpool now without Joel Matip for a while.
