'Should have stayed': Carragher says £20m player should never have left Liverpool, he's become 'forgotten’

Jamie Carragher has now claimed that one Liverpool player should have never made the decision to leave the club in the past.

It’s already been a year of huge change at Anfield, and not only because Jurgen Klopp has now handed the reins to Arne Slot

The whole hierarchy of decision making has changed at Liverpool and both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will have a huge influence on things making forward.

Barry Hunter, Liverpool’s chief scout of over 10 years, will continue to work with Dave Fallows when it comes to bringing players to Anfield, but otherwise all is new.

Although many would have hoped Klopp would remain during this revamp, it was much needed, and the club will hopefully reap the benefits.

That being said, change doesn’t always guarantee success, as Jordan Henderson has experienced since leaving Liverpool.

It caused attention this week when a message from Henderson, Klopp’s captain for so many years, wasn’t included in his goodbye video.

That’s a situation Jamie Carragher clarified on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, as well describing how Jordan Henderson has now become ‘forgotten’.

Jamie Carragher says Jordan Henderson made a poor footballing decision leaving Liverpool

Speaking on the podcast, Carragher suggested that he warned Henderson about his decision to move to Saudi Arabia.

And the pundit explained that the move was also a very ill-advised one from a footballing point of view, let alone the off-the-field matters.

He explained: “I just want to say this about Jordan. I spoke to him when he made the move to Saudi.

“I gave him my idea and what I thought of it. Sometimes you live and die by your decisions. It’s a bit like when Michael Owen went to Real Madrid and you think something good is doing to happen.

“Whereas I’m looking at Anfield on Sunday and it’s not just Klopp leaving, Thiago and Matip are getting this big send off.

“He is the guy who has lifted all the trophies for Liverpool and he’s almost a bit forgotten.

“He made a bad decision going there and I’m not talking about off the field stuff, I’m talking about the football reasons, he should have stayed at Liverpool. He deserved a send off.”

Of course, Liverpool did actually replace their captain extremely well, signing the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, who did enjoy a majestic season.

And whilst Carragher may regret the decision Henderson made, perhaps the timing did actually suit his old club.

At 33-years-old, Henderson could still enjoy some excellent moments with Ajax in the future, but that may not quite gloss over the regrets the £20m-midfielder may hold.

That being said, Gary Neville has recently named four Premier League managers who he considers to be better than Jurgen Klopp.
