136 Virgil van Dijk is starring for Liverpool this year and Cesc Fabregas has made a bold claim about the Reds skipper.
Van Dijk is back to his imperious best this season and has been crucial in Liverpool competing at the top of the Premier League and in Europe. Of course, the Dutchman has already lifted the League Cup as well.
For Liverpool fans, seeing Van Dijk back in this form is the stuff of dreams. Since suffering a serious injury at the hands of Jordan Pickford a few seasons back, some have questioned the defender.
However, speaking on the Planet Premier League podcast, former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has suggested Van Dijk is now playing so well that he could even be in the running for the Ballon D’Or.

Speaking about the influential Liverpool skipper, Fabregas lauded Van Dijk and suggested the 2024 Ballon D’Or could even be on the agenda.
“I’m going to say something that I think no one ever thought about or said, but I think potentially he could deserve the Ballon D’or, Van Dijk. Seriously speaking, fantastic leadership, he’s so confident. In terms of his power, his intelligence, his quality, he looks in control in every phase of the game in ever moment, in every situation. He doesn’t care if it’s Haaland he is facing one on one. In that situation you need a lot of personality and football intelligence to understand that situation,” Fabregas said.
A long way to go
It’s a big call this from Fabregas and given Van Dijk’s form it’s not too unjust either.
However, there is a long way to go in the race for the 2024 Ballon D’Or. Of course, Van Dijk might find himself in the mix. If he can win the league and potentially the Europa League, and then go and lead the Netherlands to success in the summer, then he really will be in the conversation.
But with defenders, it does need tend to need to be something special for them to win such awards. Indeed, only Matthias Sammer and Fabio Cannavaro have won it as defenders since the 90s.
Van Dijk, though, is a man in form and if the trophies follow, then Fabregas’ claim won’t look too outlandish at all.
