'Sent their scouts': Liverpool have now watched £35m midfielder multiple times - Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool have already made their mark on the January transfer window with the arrival of Cody Gakpo.

Fabrizio Romano, via Caught Offside, has provided an update on another addition the Reds would like to make.

Gakpo made his debut against Wolves at the weekend, but admitted he wasn’t happy with his performance.

It was his first outing since the Netherlands were eliminated from the World Cup, but plenty is expected of the 23-year-old.

Another position Liverpool may look to invest in soon is central midfield.

Jude Bellingham appears to be their number one target, but they’ll face a lot of competition for his signature.

The 19-year-old has been sensational for Borussia Dortmund and England this season.

Liverpool will be looking at other targets in case they miss out on the teenager.

Romano now suggests that Liverpool have been scouting Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

The Dutch international is having a great season in Serie A, scoring five goals in 17 league appearances.

He could be the solution to Liverpool’s midfield problems, but he’s unlikely to go anywhere in January.

Liverpool have been scouting Koopmeiners

Speaking to Caught Offside about the Dutchman, Romano said: “Honestly, Atalanta have never received any approaches for Teun Koopmeiners in January.

“It’s a quiet situation and I don’t see them selling another midfielder after Ruslan Malinovskyi to Marseille.

“Rumours are there because Liverpool sent their scouts to monitor him multiple times in the last year, but things are quiet on the Koopmeiners deal, as of now.”

A report from i News first linked Koopmeiners with a move to Anfield earlier in the window.

As Romano says, the chances of Atalanta letting him leave this month are low, given Ruslan Malinovskyi’s move to Marseille.

Instead, Koopmeiners is much more likely to be available in the summer, although Atalanta won’t want to let one of their key players leave easily.

Klopp’s midfield does look set to drastically change in the summer, with the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain potentially on their way out.

If Liverpool have been scouting Koopmeiners, then they also look set to add a deeper lying playmaker to their ranks as well.

He could come in alongside Bellingham, as they typically play such different roles.

It would be a serious show of ambition if Liverpool were to invest in both players.
