'Said something yesterday': Rio Ferdinand shares what striker told him about 44-year-old boss Liverpool want

Rio Ferdinand has shared what Danny Welbeck told him about Roberto De Zerbi at the weekend amid claims that Liverpool are interested in the Brighton manager.

Roberto De Zerbi is, unsurprisingly, on the Liverpool radar. Jurgen Klopp confirmed last week that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

Liverpool are admirers of De Zerbi. And the Italian’s stock has only risen during his time in the Premier League, with the Seagulls continuing to really impress.

Of course, De Zerbi’s time at Brighton began with a 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. And that was something of a sign of what was to come under the 44-year-old.

But perhaps he could get the chance to take that next step in his career when Klopp steps aside. Certainly, Rio Ferdinand could see De Zerbi impressing if he gets the chance on Merseyside.

Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand suggested that the Brighton players he has spoken with only have incredibly positive things to say about De Zerbi.

“I think you’ve got to listen to the players he coaches. That’s a big thing. I don’t know if the recruitment do that. I’ve spoken to a few of the guys down at Brighton, Danny Welbeck said something yesterday like the level of detail that this guy goes into, to be understanding your opponents and what he wants from you, he said I’ve never seen it. And he’s played at big clubs, Arsenal, Man United. And now, obviously he’s at Brighton,” he said.

“He’s played under enough managers, and at international level too, to know what’s a good manager and what isn’t. And the level of detail he goes into, he said he’s great at making individuals better.”

Italian will not be overawed by Anfield stage

Obviously, Liverpool will be taking a risk whoever they turn to. Klopp is one of the greatest managers the Premier League has ever seen. And he may well hand the Premier League champions over to his replacement.

But De Zerbi is someone who has clear ideas. And, just as importantly, he has nothing but full belief in what he is trying to do.

It has seen Brighton move forward after Graham Potter’s really impressive spell.

And you get the sense that he would not overawed by whatever challenge comes next in his career.

Perhaps Liverpool will be the ones to offer him that opportunity.
