Liverpool’s goalkeeper and top scorer are said to be amongst the Saudi sportswashing project’s top targets heading into the summer transfer window.
Liverpool are heading into a somewhat uncertain summer, with few on the outside certain exactly what the arrival of new manager Arne Slot and return of Michael Edwards along with new sporting director Richard Hughes behind the scenes will mean on the transfer front.
The squad as it stands has youth, promise, and quality after last summer’s midfield rebuild and are heading into the final week of the Premier League season locked into a third-place finish, but there will be changes, tweaks, arrivals, and departures—as there always are.
There could also be a few major outgoings. There have of course been lingering questions around Mohamed Salah given past interest from the Saudi Pro League as he heads into the final year of his deal. Now there whispers around star goalkeeper Alisson Becker as well.
At least according to The Guardian, who claim despite the to date somewhat less than fully successful attempts to build out the Saudi sportswashing project, the league hasn’t given up in their determination to sign more stars and have Salah and Alisson as top targets.
Over the winter, there were whispers the Saudi league would not be a major player in the summer 2024 window the way they had been in 2023 when they saw a £150M bid for Salah rejected out of hand by the Reds, but it seems such chatter may have been premature.
Until the window actually opens and moves start to happen, though, it’s hard to say for certain—and it’s perhaps even harder to say with any certainty how Liverpool would react to a big money bid for one of their top stars given the major changes taking place at the club.
